Dental implants and implant surgery

Large gaps in the dentition due to missing teeth or a completely toothless jaw are not only a problem aesthetically. They also affect health, as there is a risk of jawbone regression. Here, modern implantology offers a safe and long-term restoration of function and aesthetics!

Dental implants are artificial roots for missing teeth that are surgically placed in the jawbone. They can be used to replace individual teeth, sections of the jaw and even the complete rows of teeth in the lower or upper jaw. Here we occasionally use particularly long (zygoma implants) or particularly short implants, and we also use the latest generation of bone- and soft tissue-replacing biomaterials.

Patient videos – dental implants and implant surgery

  • Dental implants are invisible on the outside.
  • The dentures resting on implants cannot slip or fall out and are particularly suitable for the permanent attachment of dentures and bridges.
  • Generally, you do not feel your implants and can eat everything with them, just as you were used to with your natural teeth.
  • Implants protect neighbouring teeth and can be inserted even if the gaps between the teeth have existed for years.
  • Dental implants can replace individual teeth, sections of the jaw and even the complete rows of teeth in the lower or upper jaw.
  • In areas of the jaw without any teeth, implants prevent progressive bone loss. (Chewing with gum-supported removable dentures promotes degradation, whereas implant-supported dentures help to preserve the jawbone!)
  • We only use high-quality materials from the best German suppliers. The safety and durability of all the implant systems we use have been proven in long-term studies.
  • We find dental prosthesis solutions even for “hopeless cases”!

You, dear patients, can expect a team of practitioners with over 20 years of experience – both with dental implants and preparatory surgery, which includes bone augmentation and soft tissue reconstruction. The latter is necessary if you are diagnosed with regression of the jawbone – for example due to tooth bed diseases or tooth loss in the past.

Your treatment is preceded by a thorough imaging diagnosis, which we perform with the highest resolution DVT machine in its class (Morita Veraviewepocs).

Pictures show complex prosthetics in alveolar process atrophy, high-quality multiple telescopes in toothlessness, oral implant rehabilitation cases and a complicated defect situation in cleft lip and palate (picture with fixed braces or brackets).

We plan the reconstruction three-dimensionally and precisely with computer-assisted DVT imaging. Veraviewepocs 3D R100 is a combination system for panoramic, cephalometric and 3D images and has revolutionised 3D X-ray diagnostics. The ground breaking recording function maps the entire jaw arch in the format of a Reuleaux. Veraviewepoc’s 3D R100 therefore creates a unique field of view that focuses only on what is relevant and is thus very economical in terms of the amount of X-ray radiation used. With eight selectable fields of view (FOVs) and Morita’s world-class image quality, we can use the Veraviewepocs 3D R100 for a wide range of applications. We also maintain an implant database for implant planning. If the bone for the implant placement has to be built up first, we can use your own bone, which we transplant gently with ultrasound. To do this, we take some venous blood, which is centrifuged. We use this both to improve bone healing and as a separating membrane between the built-up bone and the overlying tissue. Consequently only the body’s own materials are used. As less stressful alternatives, both bone substitutes and separating membranes made from highly purified animal donor tissues can be used.

We treat bones with gentle ultrasound, demonstrated here on a raw egg. As an alternative to ultrasound bone treatment, we use the microsaw, especially in jaw bone augmentation (right or second video).

We perform your operation for the gentle insertion of dental implants in one of our modern procedure rooms under local anaesthesia, or if necessary under general anaesthesia. The procedure is largely painless for you: at the planned area, the mucosa and the bone covering skin (periosteum) are pushed aside and the implant bed, as it is known, is prepared step by step. After the implant has been screwed into its bearing, the gum is usually closed with self-dissolving sutures. This eliminates the sometimes unpleasant removal of the stitches.

About 100 well-known manufacturers produce over 300 different types of implants – and these are just the ones approved for the German market. We therefore select all the dental implants we use on you according to clear guidelines: only high-quality implants from long-standing market leaders are used, who have proven over many years, with the best-managed documentation, that they can still supply spare parts for implant types from their own production that have been in use for a long time, thanks to sound corporate management. This becomes particularly important if, for example, a further tooth loss means that an implant crown has to be changed in order to extend the implant prosthesis. The safety and durability of all the implant systems we use have been proven in long-term studies.

All dental implants are made of the body-compatible (biocompatible) metal titanium or ceramic, sometimes as a mixture of both components. They are solid screws that withstand the highest loads and whose specially machined surface promotes wound healing. During healing, you will receive a temporary denture, which may also be supported on temporary implants. After two to six months, the implant has grown firmly into the jaw, after which it can be fitted with a permanent crown or bridge.

We have a great deal of experience with implants in so-called “hopeless cases” where effective help is needed with loosened dentures. When the artificial dentition or individual replacement teeth begin to loosen, chewing, speaking and swallowing become increasingly impaired. The cause is usually deformities of the jaw – a phenomenon that general dentistry is still powerless against, even in the 21st century. We have the ability to offer special solutions for various jaw shapes, malformations and deformations with modern therapies involving special implants and telescopic prostheses that go beyond regular implant care. This involves special short or oblique implants and for the cheekbones zygomatic implants. Special prosthetic solutions include telescopic, removable bridges, known as telescopic overdentures. You can easily integrate these bridges into the oral cavity and only remove them for thorough all-round cleaning.

Implant surgery is usually only subsidised by health insurance companies and, especially in the case of statutory health insurance companies, is only covered in full for exceptional indications. Depending on whether you need to have individual teeth replaced, rows of teeth or even the entire jaw reconstructed, which may also require the rebuilding of receded jaw bones, the costs can vary accordingly. We will be happy to write down the costs for your dental implants in detail in a binding cost estimate. You will receive this for a fee after a detailed consultation and explanatory discussion at our oral and maxillofacial surgery Clinic and Ambulantory Surgery Center in Offenbach. Our advice is always accompanied by precise and detailed diagnostics. Our special expertise in dental implants also includes complex reconstructions in the mouth and jaw. Please be aware that it is therefore not possible to legitimately draw up a general schedule of costs. Please also note that for dental implants we only take care of the surgical treatment part. For the fitting of implant crowns or abutments/prosthetics we refer you to your family dentist.

How will my implant treatment be carried out?

Your treatment begins with an evaluation of the diagnostic imaging, which we perform with the highest resolution DVT machine in its class (Morita Veraviewepocs).

Following the procedure, be sure to cool the affected area of the jaw well – use moist cold! – ideally with a small towel or flannel moistened in cold water. Please do not use cool packs, cold packs or ice packs!
Taking antibiotics and/or pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory medicines can usually prevent complications such as extensive swelling or haematoma. If necessary, we will be happy to prescribe these for you directly after your treatment in our Clinic and Ambulantory Surgery Center.

Regular check-ups and good care help to optimise the life of a dental implant. For this purpose, we invite you to participate in our implant recall every six months. This regular examination makes it possible to detect rejection due to peri-implantitis (an inflammatory disease of the implant bed, similar to periodontitis in natural teeth), overloading or unfavourable soft tissue interactions at an early stage and to initiate necessary treatment measures in good time.

Around 100 well-known manufacturers produce over 300 different types of implants – and these are just the ones approved for the German market. We only use the best-documented market-leading implants, which have also already proven over many years that, due to sound corporate management, they are still able to supply spare parts for implant types of their own manufacture that have been in use for some time. This may be the case, for example, if an implant crown is changed because another tooth has been lost and the implant prosthesis needs to be extended. The safety and durability of the implant systems we use have also been proven in long-term studies. All dental implants used in the Landes and colleagues Clinic and Ambulantory Surgery Center are made of body-compatible (biocompatible) medical-grade pure titanium, ceramic or a mixture of materials.

Implantat-Recall:
Proper care and monitoring of dental implants

Do you want to enjoy your implants for a long time?
Regular check-ups and good care help to optimise the life of your dental implant. We cordially invite (and strongly encourage) you to participate in our six-monthly implant recall.

This regular examination offers you security, because it ensures that we can identify possible problems at an early stage and initiate necessary treatment measures in good time. Problem areas include rejection reactions due to peri-implantitis or overloading, as well as unfavourable soft tissue interaction (such as gingival inflammation or recession).
